Machu Picchu was rediscovered by Hiram Bingham in 1911 and is considered one of the wonders of the modern world.
To get to Machu Picchu from Cusco:
Train: You have to take a train from Cusco (from Poroy or Ollantaytambo station) to Aguas Calientes (the closest town to Machu Picchu). The two main train companies are PeruRail and Inca Rail.
Bus: From Aguas Calientes, you must take a bus (approximately 30 minutes) that goes up to the entrance of Machu Picchu.
Walking: If you are adventurous, you can opt for the Inca Trail or the alternative way to get there, although it is recommended to do it with a guide.
Generally, the visit to Machu Picchu lasts between 2 and 3 hours. If you wish to do additional trekking (such as climbing Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain), you may need more time (approximately 4 to 6 hours in total).
The best time to visit Machu Picchu is during the dry season (April to October), when rainfall is less frequent. The most popular months to visit are June, July and August, but they are also the most crowded. The rainy season is from November to March, and the rains can make the trails slippery.
Yes, especially during the high season (April to October). It is highly recommended to purchase tickets to Machu Picchu at least 1-2 months in advance. Entrance tickets to trails such as Huayna Picchu and Machu Picchu Mountain are limited, so it is important to reserve them in advance.
