Itinerary

Day 1: cusco – Rainbow Mountain – Red Valley – Anantapata

Your high-altitude expedition begins at 5:00 AM with a private pickup directly from your hotel in our exclusive executive van. We will head toward the picturesque village of Cusipata, where you will enjoy a high-energy breakfast specifically designed to optimize your physical performance at high elevations.

Following breakfast, we continue our journey for another hour through breathtaking Andean landscapes to the community of Chillihuani, the official trailhead at 14,435 ft (4,400 m). The adventure kicks off with a 90-minute trek toward the spectacular Red Valley. This geological hidden gem, rich in iron-oxide minerals, offers a surreal landscape reminiscent of the surface of Mars. We will then undertake a 30-minute technical ascent to the iconic summit of Rainbow Mountain (Vinicunca), reaching an elevation of 16,522 ft (5,036 m). Here, the unique geological formations of the massif will reveal their vibrant colors in full splendor.

After conquering the summit and capturing world-class photographs, we will descend to a strategic, scenic location to enjoy a gourmet hot lunch, prepared with fresh local ingredients. In the afternoon, the expedition continues with a 3-hour technical trek over rugged terrain to our first high-altitude campsite at Anantapata (15,580 ft / 4,750 m).

Upon arrival, our professional chef will welcome you with a restorative “tea time” service, followed by a high-cuisine nutritious dinner. We will conclude the day resting under an infinite Andean sky, with a front-row view of the majestic Ausangate Glacier.

  • Maximum Altitude: 16,522 ft / 5,036 m (Rainbow Mountain).
  • Campsite Altitude: 15,580 ft / 4,750 m (Anantapata).

  • Highlights: Martian landscapes of the Red Valley, Vinicunca summit, and a starlit night facing the mighty Apu Ausangate.

Day 2: Anantapata – Pucacocha Pass – Upis

We begin the day with a traditional Incan greeting: a hot cup of coca tea served directly to your tent. This thoughtful service helps your body oxygenate and prepare for the high-altitude journey ahead. Following this, a nutritious, chef-prepared breakfast awaits at the dining table to fuel our most significant climbing day.

This stage is considered the most challenging yet deeply rewarding part of the expedition. We will conquer the formidable Pucacocha Pass (also known as Anantapata Pass) at 16,076 ft (4,900 m). From this strategic vantage point, the sheer magnitude of the Apu Ausangate glacier is revealed in its full, crystalline glory—a breathtaking sight reserved only for those who dare to venture into the high Andean peaks.

The descent is a masterclass in alpine geography. We will navigate through deep valleys where wild vicuñas and herds of alpacas roam freely in their natural habitat. A gourmet lunch will be served trailside, at a location strategically chosen to offer panoramic views of the turquoise glacial lakes below.

In the afternoon, the trek continues toward the shores of Ausangatecocha, a pristine lake fed directly by the melting ice of the massive glacier. We then push forward to our base camp at Upis (14,435 ft / 4,400 m). This campsite is legendary for its direct, front-row view of the Ausangate’s north face, providing a majestic backdrop for our signature “tea time” and a professional dinner crafted by our mountain chef.

Day 3: Upis – Tinki – Pacchanta (Volcanic Hot Springs) – Aguas Calientes

Our final morning in the high mountains begins with a steady 3-to-4-hour descent through a valley of glacial moraines and alpine wetlands. As we leave the rugged peaks of the Vilcanota Range behind, we arrive at the traditional community of Pacchanta (13,451 ft / 4,100 m).

Here, you will experience the ultimate reward: a therapeutic soak in medicinal hot springs fueled by an ancient, extinct volcano. This geothermal experience is meticulously timed to restore your muscles after the physical demands of the trek. While you relax with a direct view of the glaciers you just conquered, our team will prepare a final celebratory lunch to honor the successful expedition through the Ausangate region.

Following lunch, we transition from the high-altitude wilderness to the lush valleys below. A 4-hour private transfer will take us to the historic village of Ollantaytambo, the “Living Inca City.” From here, we board the Expedition Train for a scenic 1-hour and 45-minute journey along the Urubamba River, arriving in Aguas Calientes (Machu Picchu Pueblo). Our goal is to beat the crowds, taking one of the first shuttle buses (a 25-minute scenic ride) to arrive at the citadel in the ethereal morning light.

Today, we delve deep into the heart of the Incan Empire. Your expert Ali Perú Treks guide will lead you through Circuit 2 (The Classic Route).
