Itinerary

Cusco – Ollantaytambo – Machupicchu – Cusco

Your adventure begins with ultimate convenience. Our expert guide and private transportation will pick you up directly from your hotel doorstep in Cusco (11,152 ft). At Ali Perú Treks, we eliminate the stress of public transfers; you will travel in one of our private vans, enjoying a two-hour journey through the sacred landscapes of the Urubamba Valley to the historic station of Ollantaytambo (9,160 ft). (Note: Breakfast is not included; we recommend requesting a box breakfast from your hotel).

Once at the station, you will board the Expedition Train for a two-hour traverse toward Aguas Calientes (6,692 ft). During this ride, you will witness one of the most beautiful rail routes in the world, where towering Andean peaks gradually give way to the lush vegetation of the cloud forest, flanking the roaring Vilcanota River.

Upon arrival in Aguas Calientes, your guide will strategically lead you to the Consettur bus station for a 25-minute ride up the Hiram Bingham highway. Entering the Machu Picchu Historical Sanctuary (7,972 ft), we will use Circuit 2 (The Classic Route), the most comprehensive and popular path. Your guide will first take you to strategic viewpoints for the iconic postcard photo. Then, you will explore temples, plazas, and urban sectors during a 3-hour guided tour, diving deep into the history and mysteries of the Incas.

Huayna Picchu Mountain: If you booked an additional permit in advance, you will begin your extra hike to the summit of Huayna Picchu (8,835 ft) after the guided tour (requires prior schedule coordination).

Following the exploration, we will descend by bus to Aguas Calientes. We recommend heading down at least 2 hours before your train departure to enjoy the town. Your guide will accompany you to a trusted local restaurant for lunch. (Note: Lunch is not included, giving you the freedom to choose the dining experience that best fits your taste).

Phase 5: Premium Door-to-Door Return After saying goodbye to your guide, you will board the return train to Ollantaytambo. Upon arrival at the station, your Ali Perú Treks driver will be waiting with a personalized sign. We will transport you in our private van directly back to Cusco, dropping you off safely at your hotel for a well-deserved rest.

Packing List

To ensure your experience at Machu Picchu is comfortable and seamless, we have prepared this essential guide. Please note that official regulations prohibit backpacks exceeding 20-25 liters inside the citadel.

The Essentials (In your Daypack)

These items must be with you at all times.

  • Original Passport: The physical document is mandatory to board the train and enter Machu Picchu. (It must match the document used for your booking).
  • Ergonomic Daypack: A 20L to 25L backpack is perfect. Avoid bulky packs to ensure a smooth transition through security checkpoints.
  • Water Storage: A reusable water bottle or Camelbak (1.5 to 2 Liters). Following our Zero Plastic philosophy, disposable plastic bottles are prohibited within the sanctuary.
  • Hiking Footwear: Lightweight trekking shoes or boots with good traction (already broken-in). You will be walking on original Inca stone paths that can be slippery when damp.
  • Rain Gear: A high-quality rain poncho or a lightweight waterproof jacket (GORE-TEX). The cloud forest weather can change in minutes.
  • Sun Protection: High SPF sunscreen, polarized sunglasses, and a wide-brimmed hat. UV radiation in the Andes is extremely powerful.
  • Personal Cash: Small denominations in Peruvian Soles (S/ 100 – 200) for tips, restroom fees, or local snacks in Aguas Calientes.

Recommended Clothing (The Layering System)

In a single day, you will experience everything from the chilly Cusco dawn to the tropical heat of Machu Picchu.

  • Base Layer: Moisture-wicking t-shirt (avoid cotton as it stays wet).
  • Mid-Layer: A light fleece or a breathable long-sleeve shirt.
  • Hiking Pants: Lightweight and preferably water-resistant. Avoid jeans, as they are heavy and slow to dry.
  • Socks: One pair of high-quality wool trekking socks to prevent blisters.

Health & Personal Care

  • Insect Repellent: Crucial. Machu Picchu is home to small biting midges. Apply this before entering the citadel.
  • Personal Hygiene Kit: Hand sanitizer, wet wipes, and lip balm (the Andean air is very dry).
  • Medication: Any personal prescriptions and altitude sickness pills if you are prone to symptoms.

Quick-Access Items

  • Power Bank: Essential for charging your phone or camera. You will take hundreds of photos, and the cold/constant use drains batteries quickly!
  • Energy Snacks: Energy bars, chocolate, or nuts to keep your stamina up during the 2-hour guided tour.
  • Trash Bag: At Ali Perú Treks, we follow Leave No Trace principles. Everything you bring in must be brought back out with you.

Expert Reminder

  • Prohibited Items: Tripods, drones, selfie sticks, and large umbrellas are not allowed inside the site.

Luggage Restrictions: If you have large suitcases, please leave them in storage at your hotel in Cusco. Train companies have strict weight and size limits for carry-on luggage only.

Travel Info

To ensure your experience at the Inca Citadel is nothing short of exceptional, we recommend carefully reading these technical and logistical guidelines prepared by our team of experts.

Acclimatization and Altitude

Cusco is located at an elevation of 11,152 ft (3,400 m), while Machu Picchu sits lower at 7,972 ft (2,430 m).

  • Expert Recommendation: We strongly suggest arriving in Cusco at least 1 days prior to your tour to allow your body to adapt.
  • Health Tip: Stay well-hydrated, avoid heavy meals the day before, and consider coca tea as a natural local remedy for altitude.

Entrance Regulations (Circuit 2)

The Peruvian Ministry of Culture has implemented strict circuits to preserve the sanctuary.

  • Circuit 2 (Classic): This is the circuit included by Ali Perú Treks because it is the most comprehensive. it allows for the classic “postcard photo” and full access to the urban and religious sectors.
  • The Golden Rule: Once you exit the circuit, re-entry is not permitted. Entrance tickets have a specific time slot with a maximum grace period of 30 to 45 minutes.

Documentation (Strict Requirement)

  • Original Passport: You must present your physical, original passport at the entrance gate. Copies or digital photos are not accepted.
  • Souvenir Stamp: Don’t forget you can get a commemorative Machu Picchu stamp in your passport at the exit!

Baggage Restrictions

  • On the Train: Railway companies (PeruRail/IncaRail) only allow one carry-on bag or backpack weighing between 11 lbs to 17 lbs (5 kg to 8 kg) per person.
  • At Machu Picchu: Backpacks larger than 35 liters are not allowed inside. If your bag exceeds this size, you must leave it in the storage lockers at the entrance for an additional fee.

Prohibited Items

To protect the heritage site, the following items are strictly prohibited:

  • Trekking poles without rubber tips.
  • Tripods, drones, or professional filming equipment (special permits are required).
  • Single-use plastics (disposable water bottles). Please use reusable bottles.
  • Selfie sticks.

Weather and Clothing

The weather in the cloud forest is highly unpredictable.

  • Dress Code: Use the “layering” technique. A moisture-wicking t-shirt, a light fleece, and a waterproof jacket are essential.
  • Rainy Season (November to March): A rain poncho is mandatory during these months.
  • Insects: Machu Picchu is home to small biting midges; we highly recommend using repellent with DEET.

Money and Gratuities

  • Cash: While many places in Aguas Calientes accept credit cards, carry Peruvian Soles (PEN) in cash for tips, restroom fees (approx. S/ 2.00), or small purchases.
  • Gratuities: At Ali Perú Treks, tips for the guide and driver are voluntary and reflect your satisfaction with the service provided.

Faqs

Frequently asked questions

How far in advance should I book this tour?

We recommend booking at least 4 to 5 months in advance. Permits for Circuit 2 and train seats are limited and sell out quickly, especially during the high season (May to August).

Does the tour include hotel pickup, or do I need to go to a meeting point?

We provide Door-to-Door service. We will pick you up and drop you off directly at your hotel in Cusco, eliminating the need for extra costs or stressful early-morning walks.

Which Machu Picchu circuit will I visit?

We guarantee Circuit 2 (The Classic Route). This is the most comprehensive circuit, allowing you to take the famous postcard photo and explore both the agricultural and urban sectors.

Why are meals not included?

We want to give you freedom. Aguas Calientes offers an incredible culinary scene, from local markets to gourmet restaurants. Your guide will provide the best recommendations based on your taste and budget.

What is the “Expedition” train, and can I upgrade?

The Expedition train is a comfortable service with panoramic windows designed for adventurers. If you prefer more luxury, you can request an upgrade to the Vistadome train for an additional fee to enjoy 360° views and onboard snacks.

Is the walk inside Machu Picchu difficult?

The difficulty level is easy to moderate. You will walk on stone paths and original stairs for about 2.5 hours. It only requires basic physical condition.

What happens if my passport expires before the trip?

You should book with your current passport. If you renew it, you simply need to bring both physical passports (the old and the new one) to enter. The entrance number must match your booking.

Can I visit Machu Picchu without a guide?

No. Per government regulations, it is mandatory to enter accompanied by an official tour guide. We provide an expert guide certified by the Ministry of Culture.

Are there restrooms inside the Machu Picchu citadel?

No. The only restrooms are located outside the entrance. We recommend using them before you enter, as re-entry is not permitted with the same ticket.

What luggage can I bring on the full-day tour?

Only a small daypack with a maximum capacity of 25 liters (approx. 11 lbs). Train and citadel regulations strictly prohibit large suitcases or bulky backpacks.

Is altitude sickness (soroche) a problem on this tour?

Machu Picchu (7,972 ft) is lower than Cusco (11,152 ft), so most people feel better there. However, we recommend being in Cusco for at least 48 hours beforehand to acclimate.

What clothing should I wear?

Dress in layers. The weather can change from chilly in the morning to intense heat at midday, with potential rain. Don’t forget sturdy shoes with good traction.

What happens if it rains on the day of my tour?

The tour operates normally. Machu Picchu under rain and mist has a special, mystical atmosphere. Just make sure to bring a rain poncho (we provide a complimentary one).

Can I bring trekking poles?

Only if you have a physical limitation and the poles have rubber tips. Metal-tipped poles are strictly forbidden to protect the ancient Inca stones.

Is there an age limit for the tour?

No. This tour is suitable for all ages, from children to seniors, as long as they have the basic mobility to climb stone steps.

What is the weather like in Machu Picchu?

It is a cloud forest climate: humid and changeable. The dry season is from May to October, and the rainy season is from November to March.

Can I buy food inside Machu Picchu?

Food is not sold inside, and eating is not permitted within the archaeological site. Only reusable water bottles are allowed.

Is the tour shared or private?

We offer both options. Our shared groups are small (maximum 8 people) to ensure quality. If you are looking for exclusivity, you can request a private tour.

Why choose Ali Perú Treks for this Full Day?

We are ethical local experts. We don’t just sell a ticket; we provide private logistics, safety equipment like onboard oxygen, and guides who truly love their culture, ensuring a professional yet human experience.

What should I do if I want to visit Huayna Picchu Mountain?

You must inform us at the time of booking. It has an extra cost, and spaces often sell out up to 4 months in advance. It is a steep, 2-hour additional hike.
