Short Inca Trail Maps (2 Days / 1 Night)
Map 2: Our first map details the express route to Machu Picchu, perfect for those looking to experience the Inca Trail in a shorter timeframe.

Map 2: Elevation Profile & Difficulty:
This second map is crucial for understanding the physical challenge of the 2 Day Inca Trail, which is concentrated into a single day of hiking.

Our adventure begins early. We will pick you up around 4:00 AM in our private transportation from your hotel or accommodation (we offer pickups in Cusco, Urubamba, or Ollantaytambo).
We will drive you 2 hours to the Ollantaytambo train station. Here, we’ll board a scenic train that travels alongside the Sacred Valley river, offering beautiful landscapes until we reach Km 104 (Chachabamba), the official starting point of our trek.
Important: We will go directly to the checkpoint. You must have your original passport on hand to enter. Once inside, we will visit the first Inca site of the day, Chachabamba, an ancient checkpoint for Machu Picchu. Your expert Ali Peru Treks guide will explain the complete history of this fascinating place.
After exploring Chachabamba, we begin a gradual 4 hour ascent. The trail leads us to the incredible archaeological site of Wiñay Wayna (2,650 m / 8,694 ft), which means «Forever Young» in Quechua. The name comes from the abundant orchids in the area, making this perhaps the most beautiful place on the trail.
After touring this spectacular site, your reward arrives! Unlike other operators who hand you a cold box lunch, Ali Peru Treks offers you a superior experience. Our professional chef will be waiting for you with a freshly prepared, gourmet picnic style lunch
You don’t have to carry your food! We take care of everything so you can simply enjoy a delicious meal, incredible views, and recharge your energy as you deserve.
After our lunch, we continue with a 1 hour hike to the Inti Punku (the Sun Gate). From here, you will be rewarded with your first panoramic view of Machu Picchu in all its majesty and grandeur. It is a truly unforgettable moment.
From the Sun Gate, we will descend for 40 minutes to the main citadel platform. You will have time to take spectacular classic photos and soak in the energy of the site.
Afterward, we will take the bus down to Aguas Calientes (the town of Machu Picchu). Tonight, you will stay in a comfortable 3 star hotel, which is included in your tour. We will close this perfect day with a delicious dinner at a local restaurant.

After an early breakfast at your hotel, you will only need to bring your daypack with your essentials. The hotel will store your main luggage while you explore. To maximize our experience and beat the crowds, our plan is to take one of the first buses up to Machu Picchu (a 25-minute ride).
Yesterday, you had that unforgettable first view from the Sun Gate. Today, we re-enter Machu Picchu, but this time for a complete, in-depth exploration in the magical morning light.
Your expert Ali Peru Treks guide will lead you on a two-hour guided tour of the most important sites in the citadel. You will learn about the history and culture of the Inca Empire while visiting temples, plazas, and the most impressive viewpoints.
After the tour, you will also have free time to explore on your own and immerse yourself in the energy of the site.
We recommend returning to Aguas Calientes at least 2 hours before your train’s departure. You can have lunch (not included) at one of the many restaurants in town.
After lunch, your Ali Peru Treks guide will personally escort you to the train station. You will board the return train from Aguas Calientes to Ollantaytambo, a scenic journey of approximately 2 hours.
At the Ollantaytambo station, our Ali Peru Treks staff will be waiting for you promptly to transfer you back to Cusco in our private transportation, dropping you off comfortably at your hotel door, bringing your unforgettable adventure to a close.

The trek begins at kilometer 104 on the railway to Aguas Calientes and includes a 6 to 7-hour hike through stunning archaeological sites like Chachabamba and Wiñay Wayna. The highlight is arriving at Machu Picchu through the iconic Sun Gate (Inti Punku), with unforgettable panoramic views. This tour is perfect for all ages with a moderate fitness level.
A great option for families, couples, or solo travelers who want the full Inca Trail experience without camping or multi-day hiking.
Each route offers a unique experience leading to Machu Picchu. The Short Inca Trail is a 2-day hike focused on cultural and historical immersion. The Salkantay Trek takes 4 to 5 days, crossing snowy mountains and cloud forests—a more adventurous, nature-focused journey. The Classic Inca Trail spans 4 days/3 nights, covering 42 km with overnight camping and more archaeological sites. It’s the most iconic and physically demanding option.

Ali Peru Treks Tip: Celebrating a special occasion? Let us know—we can help personalize your hotel stay with a romantic setup or a relaxing spa treatment.
The best time to do the Short Inca Trail is during the dry season, from April to October. The peak season is June to August, and permits for the trail sell out quickly. We recommend booking 4–6 months in advance to ensure availability. Only 250 permits are issued per day by the Peruvian government.
Ali Peru Treks Tip: Planning for 2025? Secure your spot between November and January, when permit sales open. We’ll assist with permits and train tickets as soon as the dates are released.
When should I travel to Peru for the Inca Trail?
This is one of our most common questions! Deciding when to travel depends on your tolerance for rain and crowds. We’ve created a complete guide explaining the breakdown of the Inca Trail’s climate to help you decide.
The Short Inca Trail is considered of moderate difficulty. It is 12 kilometers (6 miles) long and has an elevation gain of 2,000 feet (600 meters). The trail includes several uphill sections and some stairs, but is generally well maintained and not too strenuous. Most people find that they can complete the hike without significant problems.
Of course, as with any hike, there are always risks involved. Be prepared for the hike by carrying plenty of water and food and wear proper walking shoes. Also, be aware of your surroundings and don’t take unnecessary risks.
No, the Short Inca Trail can only be hiked with an authorized agency and an official guide. The Peruvian government regulates access to the trail, and all treks must be accompanied by certified guides.
During the tour you can only take the necessary luggage. The rest of your luggage must remain in Cusco. You can store it at:
The hotel: If you return to the same hotel after the trek, we recommend that you store your luggage at the hotel. Most hotels in Cusco offer this service free of charge.
At aliperutreks office: You can leave your luggage in our office, we have a secure storage room to keep all your luggage. We will deliver it to you after the trek.
Yes, you can stay in Urubamba or Ollantaytambo. Pick up will be 1 hour after pick up from Cusco.
No, you must book a tour with an authorized operator such as Aliperutreks.
Both tours are very similar; they follow the same route and visit the same places. The main difference is that during the Inca Trail with Camping you will sleep in comfortable tents under a sky of stars.
We recommend arriving in Cuzco at least 1 or 2 days before the trek. If arriving from higher altitudes, only one day is required for acclimatization.
The ideal season is from April to October, which is the dry season. The driest months are May to August.
in the two day Inca Trail tour you will only have to carry what you need as this tour does not include porters so you will carry your own backpack.
The Short Inca Trail is located in the cloud forest region where the climate is warm and humid. The weather on the Inca Trail and Machu Picchu can be very unpredictable; it can be sunny during the day, be cloudy or even rain early in the morning and late in the afternoon.
We have 2 seasons in the Andes; the dry season (April to October) and the wet season (November to March). No matter what season you travel in, it is best to be prepared for all types of weather.
Preparing your pack is the first step of the adventure! A smart packing list is key to fully enjoying the Short Inca Trail. Here is exactly what you need (and what you don’t) to hike safely and comfortably.
This is the most important section. Without these documents, you will not be allowed to enter the Inca Trail.
- Original Physical Passport: ESSENTIAL. It will be checked at the Chachabamba checkpoint and when boarding the train.
- Important: It must be the same passport you used for your reservation.
- Student ID (if applicable): If you booked with a student discount, you must bring your original, physical ID card. Copies are not accepted.

- Sunscreen
- Facial moisturizer
- Mosquito repellents
- Moist towelettes

- Personal medication
- Small Daypack (25L): Ideal for carrying your water, jacket, snacks, and camera. Key tip: At Machu Picchu (Day 2), large backpacks must be stored in lockers (cost is approx. 5 Soles).

- Reusable Water Bottle or CamelBak: Single-use plastic bottles are prohibited on the Inca Trail. You will need to carry at least 2 liters of water.
The weather in the cloud forest changes quickly. The best strategy is to use layers you can easily put on and take off.

- Trekking Pants (1):Example Comfortable and quick-drying. Avoid jeans—if they get wet, they are heavy and cold.

- Hand Sanitizer and Toilet Paper: Bathrooms on the route are basic. It’s a good idea to bring your own.
- Portable Battery (Power Bank): Don’t run out of battery for your photos!
