The Inca Trail is a network of trails that the ancient Incas used to connect their capital, Cusco, with Machu Picchu. Today, it is a popular multi-day hike that allows travelers to explore ruins, mountains and valleys as they approach Machu Picchu.
The traditional Inca Trail trek generally lasts 4 days and 3 nights. However, there are shorter options, such as the 2-day Inca Trail. The 4-day trek is the most popular and covers about 45 km (26 miles).
The level of difficulty varies according to each person’s fitness level, but in general, the Inca Trail is considered moderately challenging. It has some steep climbs and uneven terrain, but it is accessible to people of average fitness level.
The best time to hike the Inca Trail is during the dry season, which runs from May to September. During these months, rainfall is less frequent, making the hike safer and more enjoyable. The months of November to April can be rainy and the trail may be closed in February for maintenance.
Yes, access to the Inca Trail is restricted, and a special permit is required. These permits are limited and must be reserved in advance, as there are only a certain number of people who can hike the trail each day. Generally, permits must be booked through an authorized travel agenc
