Advantages of the Lares Trek + Short Inca Trail
- Authentic Cultural Immersion: The Lares Trek offers a deep dive into Andean culture, allowing trekkers to visit remote villages like Cancha Cancha and Huacawasi. Here, you can engage with local Quechua communities, witnessing traditional weaving practices and daily life that has remained unchanged for centuries.
- Less Crowded Trails: Compared to the Classic Inca Trail, the Lares route is less frequented, providing a more serene and personal trekking experience through the Andes.
- No Permit Restrictions: Unlike the Inca Trail, which requires permits that can sell out months in advance, the Lares Trek does not have such restrictions, offering more flexibility in planning.
- Scenic Diversity: This trek combines the high-altitude landscapes of the Lares Valley with the lush cloud forests of the Short Inca Trail, culminating in the breathtaking view of Machu Picchu from the Sun Gate.
- Comprehensive Support: Trekkers benefit from services like mule support for carrying gear during the Lares segment and porters on the Inca Trail, ensuring a more comfortable journey.
Considerations for the Lares Trek + Short Inca Trail
- High Altitude Challenges: The trek reaches elevations up to 4,830 meters (15,846 feet) at the Sicllakasa Pass. Proper acclimatization in Cusco for at least two days prior is essential to mitigate altitude sickness.
- Variable Weather Conditions: The Andes are known for unpredictable weather. Trekkers should be prepared for sudden changes, including rain, snow, and cold temperatures, especially during the dry season from May to August.
- Physical Demands: The trek involves long days of hiking, with distances ranging from 8 to 12 kilometers per day over rugged and steep terrain. A good level of physical fitness is recommended.
- Limited Amenities: While the trek offers cultural richness, accommodations are primarily camping-based, with basic facilities. Trekkers should be prepared for rustic conditions during the journey.
- Seasonal Trail Closures: The Short Inca Trail portion is closed annually in February for maintenance. Planning your trek outside of this period is necessary.
We begin your expedition into the heart of the Andes with our premium pickup service. At 6:00 a.m., our private van will pick you up from the comfort of your hotel or apartment whether in Cusco, Urubamba, or Pisaq to start our scenic journey through the Sacred Valley
Our first stop will be the vibrant local market in Calca (2,926 m / 9,600 ft), after a 1.5-hour drive. Here, you will have an authentic cultural immersion. We’ll give you 20 minutes to explore, buy last-minute snacks, or, if you wish, purchase fruit or notebooks to share with the children in the high-Andean communities we will be visiting.
From Calca, we will continue in our private van for another 1 hour and 40 minutes, ascending toward a hidden paradise: the renowned Lares Hot Springs (3,250 m / 10,660 ft). Before the trek, you will have the chance to soak and revitalize. This is not just a simple bath, but a natural therapeutic complex. The facilities are perfectly designed with multiple pools, allowing you to create your own thermal circuit: you can move gradually from the cold pools to the warmer, most comforting ones. These medicinal waters, famous in the region for their healing properties, are the perfect preparation to relax your muscles and acclimatize your body for the grand adventure ahead.
Completely refreshed, our talented Ali Peru Treks chef will delight you with a delicious, nutritious breakfast, giving you the energy you need for the day.
After a short 20-minute van ride to the trailhead at the Pampa Corral community (3,460 m / 11,350 ft), the real adventure begins. We will wave goodbye to our vehicle and start a gradual 2-hour uphill hike along a picturesque rural path. The landscape is spectacular, offering breathtaking views at every turn.
We will arrive at the remote community of Quishuarani (3,788 m / 12,428 ft) just in time for a gourmet Andean lunch. After eating, you will have one of the most memorable experiences of the trip: we will visit a local family. This is a golden opportunity for an authentic connection, where you will learn about their traditional way of life, their weaving techniques, and their worldview.
Immediately after, you will witness a unique cultural demonstration: how Andean communities prepare and load their llamas. You will see firsthand how these noble animals are used as pack animals, an ancestral practice that remains vital to life in the highlands.
With a full heart, we resume our hike for another 2 hours. The trail rewards us with a natural jewel: a stunning 7-waterfall cascade, a perfect spot for photos and to admire the power of nature.
Our final destination is the campsite at the Qoyalay Qocha Lagoon (3,900 m / 12,795 ft). Upon arrival, you will be welcomed by our team with a comforting «tea time.» While the chef prepares an exquisite dinner with fresh, local products, you can relax in front of the serene lagoon.
If the sky is clear, we will close the day with a talk on the Andean constellations, and you will sleep under a blanket of stars, lulled by the silence of the mountains.

The best time to do the Lares Trek is during the dry season, which runs from April to October. During these months, rainfall is minimal and the weather is more predictable, making the treks more comfortable and safe. The rainy season (November to March) can make the terrain slippery and difficult to walk on.
The highest point of the trek is at pachacutec Pass, at 4,700 meters above sea level. During the trek, trekkers cross several high points, which can cause altitude sickness in some people if they are not properly acclimatized. The average altitude of the areas through which the trek passes is between 3,000 and 4,200 meters.
The highest point on the Short Inca Trail is the Wiñay Wayna Pass, which is about 2,650 meters (8,694 feet) above sea level. Although it is less high than the Warmiwañusca Pass on the full Inca Trail, the altitude can still affect some people, so it is important to acclimatize in Cusco before starting the trek.
It is important to be well prepared, acclimatized to the altitude and in good physical condition to enjoy the hike safely.
Altitude: The trek takes place at high altitudes, reaching up to 4,700 meters.
Terrain: Although the route is less steep than the Inca Trail, it still involves climbing up and down uneven trails in some sections.
No, the LARES TREK can only be hiked with an authorized agency and an official guide. The Peruvian government regulates access to the trail, and all treks must be accompanied by certified guides.
During the tour you can only take the necessary luggage. The rest of your luggage must remain in Cusco. You can store it at:
The hotel: If you return to the same hotel after the trek, we recommend that you store your luggage at the hotel. Most hotels in Cusco offer this service free of charge.

Yes, you can stay in Urubamba or pisac. Pick up will be 1 hour after pick up from Cusco.
