Conquer the peak of Vinicunca (Rainbow Mountain), reaching a breathtaking altitude of 5,200 meters (17,060 feet). This is more than a scenic walk; it is an immersion into the powerful energy of the Andes. Our local, professional guides are trained experts in high-altitude safety, carrying satellite phones and guaranteed oxygen tanks throughout the entire Rainbow Mountain and Red Valley Tour. We ensure your focus remains solely on the majestic landscape, while we manage your safety and comfort.
The journey includes the exclusive, visually stunning detour to the Red Valley Lookout, a surreal, Mars-like landscape of intense red clay soil. As a responsible agency, we guarantee that all entrance fees to both Vinicunca and the Red Valley are included. By choosing Ali Peru Treks, you support a local company that invests directly in the communities and treats every team member, from guides to drivers, with the dignity and respect they deserve.
Your adventure begins early at 4:00 a.m. with a comfortable private van pickup directly from your hotel in Cusco. We travel two hours through the scenic South Valley to the village of Cusipata (3,310 m / 10,860 ft). Here, you will enjoy a high-energy, hot breakfast, essential fuel carefully prepared to aid your body’s performance at altitude.
After breakfast, we continue by private transport for one more hour until we reach the trailhead in the Chilliwani community (4,600 m / 15,091 ft). The ascent to Vinicunca covers approximately 3 km (1.86 miles). Along the path, you will observe local wildlife, including large herds of llamas and alpacas, against the stunning backdrop of the high Andes.
Upon reaching the summit (5,036 m / 16,522 ft), you are rewarded with the iconic multi-hued geological formations of Vinicunca and the powerful presence of the Ausangate Mountain, a sacred Apú (mountain spirit) of the Incas. We then take the additional, stunning Red Valley detour (30 minutes extra hiking), a contrast of deep red and ochre that few travelers experience. We descend the same path to our van, returning to Cusipata for a satisfying, freshly prepared local buffet lunch before returning you to your hotel in Cusco around 5:00 p.m.

The round-trip hike from the trailhead to the Rainbow Mountain viewpoint takes approximately 3 to 3.5 hours in total.
The hike is rated as moderately challenging. The major factor is the extreme altitude, which makes breathing difficult. We recommend a moderate level of fitness and proper acclimatization.
Yes, it is essential. We require guests to spend at least two full days in Cusco or the Sacred Valley before attempting this strenuous, high-altitude tour.
Vinicunca is the classic and most popular Rainbow Mountain and Red Valley route, requiring a challenging trek. If you are comparing the two, read our article on Vinicunca vs Palccoyo.

Yes, an oxygen tank and a comprehensive first aid kit are carried by your guide at all times as part of our high-altitude safety protocol.
Both are stunning day treks. Rainbow Mountain is higher and more challenging. Humantay Lake Tour is slightly lower and less strenuous, making it a great alternative for altitude practice.
The dry season (April to October) offers the best weather conditions with clearer skies and less chance of snow. However, the trek runs year-round.
If there is light snow, the colors may still be partially visible. If there is a heavy snowfall, the mountain may be covered. Your guide will provide the latest weather updates.
Basic restrooms are available at the trailhead and at designated points along the main ascent.
The Red Valley is an adjacent area known for its vivid, deep red soil and hillsides. The color comes from iron oxide in the ground, offering a stunning contrast to the multi-hued Vinicunca.
We recommend bringing 100 to 150 Peruvian Soles for horse rental, snacks, and tips for your guide and driver.
No, a special permit is not required. The entry fees for both the mountain and the Red Valley are included in your tour price.
