Our route is specifically designed for your well-being: by departing at a premium hour, we guarantee you a restful night’s sleep, allowing you to enjoy breakfast at your hotel and start the adventure with full vitality. Our destination is the strategic trailhead in Chilliwani (15,091 ft / 4,600 m).

During the approximately 1.86-mile (3 km) trek, you will witness high-altitude biodiversity in its purest state. You will hike surrounded by vast meadows home to hundreds of alpacas and llamas, all under the watchful gaze of the ancient glaciers of the Vilcanota mountain range.
Upon reaching the summit of Vinicunca Mountain (16,522 ft / 5,036 m), you will be rewarded with the stunning sight of its multi-colored mineral stripes and the powerful presence of Mount Ausangate, the guardian spirit of the Andes.
To make this experience even more exclusive, we include the detour to the Red Valley. This surreal landscape, with its deep crimson hills contrasting against the bright blue sky, is a hidden gem that very few travelers ever get to see—an experience that will truly take your breath away.

- Original Passport: Mandatory for checkpoints along the route.
- Cash (Peruvian Soles): For personal expenses, extra snacks, or horse rentals (local villagers only accept cash).
Clothing (The Layering System)
The weather changes drastically in minutes. You should dress in layers:

- Outer Layer: Waterproof and windproof jacket (essential for the summit).
- Hiking Pants: Comfortable and preferably water-resistant. We do not recommend wearing jeans.
- Footwear: Hiking boots or trail running shoes with excellent grip/traction.
Protection Accessories
- Beanie and Gloves: The wind at the summit is freezing.
- Sun Hat and Buff: To protect your neck and face.
- Sunglasses (UV Protection): Solar radiation is extremely strong at high altitudes.
- Sunscreen (SPF 50+): Even on cloudy days, the UV index is very high.

Altitude and Preparation
Rainbow Mountain is located at over 16,400 feet (5,000 meters).

The Ali Peru Advantage: Because we pick you up at 06:00 AM, your body starts the hike well-rested. This significantly improves your stamina and oxygenation compared to middle-of-the-night departures.
Weather and Clothing (Layering System)
Andean weather is unpredictable. It can change from bright sunshine to freezing winds in minutes.

Faqs
Frequently asked questions
Why is the pickup at 06:00 AM instead of earlier?
This is our biggest advantage. Most agencies pick up at 03:00 AM, which causes fatigue and increases the risk of altitude sickness. By starting at 06:00 AM, we allow you to sleep well and have breakfast at your hotel. A well-rested body oxygenates much better, allowing you to enjoy the hike with energy and health.
How difficult is the hike?
The hike is considered moderate to challenging primarily due to the altitude, not necessarily the steepness. The trail is steady, but the air is thinner. Because we include trekking poles and start later, the physical effort feels much more manageable than a conventional tour.
Do I have to pay for entry fees when I arrive at the mountain?
No. Unlike other agencies, Ali Peru Treks already includes all admission tickets for both Rainbow Mountain and the Red Valley. You won’t have to wait in line or worry about carrying extra cash for this purpose.
What happens if I feel sick due to the altitude?
Your safety is our priority. Our guides are certified in mountain first aid and always carry emergency oxygen tanks and a full medical kit. If you feel unwell, the guide will assist you immediately to decide if you can continue or if it’s better to descend.
Are horses available for rent?
Yes. If you find the climb too difficult, you can rent a horse directly from the local community at the trailhead. The cost is approximately $20 – $25 USD (cash payment to the local). Your guide will help you arrange the rental if needed.
What should I bring with me?
The most important thing is the layering system (thermal wear, fleece, and a waterproof jacket). It is also essential to bring sunscreen, sunglasses, water, personal snacks, and a small backpack. Don’t forget your original passport for the checkpoints.
Do you include trekking poles?
Yes! We provide professional trekking poles free of charge. They are essential for your balance and to protect your knees, especially during the descent from the Red Valley.
