Overview

Learn how the Incas utilized llamas as the primary means of cargo transport throughout their vast empire; today, at Ali Perú Treks, we continue to honor that millennial tradition. For the ancient Quechua people, the llama was more than just an animal; it was a connection to Pachamama (Mother Earth) and a fundamental pillar of Tawantinsuyu logistics. Following that legacy, we have revived the ancestral caravan to offer you the Ausangate Rainbow Mountain Llama Trek, an expedition that combines mysticism, untouched nature, and absolute environmental respect.

Llama Pack Caravan: Hike alongside traditional llamas, the authentic and eco-friendly transport of the high Andes.

Apu Ausangate Vistas: Stand in awe of the massive glaciers and towering peaks of the highest mountain in the Cusco region.

Vinicunca Rainbow Mountain: Witness the surreal natural colors of the painted hills at sunrise before the crowds arrive.

Seven Lagoons: Explore the pristine, multi-colored glacial lakes reflecting the majestic Andean sky.

Machu Picchu Finale: Experience a private, expert-led tour of the legendary Incan citadel.

Itinerary

Day 1: Cusco – Tinqui – Upis

Your expedition begins at 5:00 AM with a direct pickup from your hotel in Cusco (11,152 ft / 3,400 m) in our private transport. We start the journey with a two-hour drive to the picturesque village of Tinqui (12,467 ft / 3,800 m), where we will make a strategic stop to explore the local market and pick up any last-minute supplies.

From there, we continue for another 40 minutes to Upis Pampa (14,271 ft / 4,350 m), the perfect setting to enjoy a gourmet breakfast prepared on the spot by the Ali Perú Treks professional chef. At this point, you will meet your muleteer and the traditional pack llamas, our ancestral companions on this journey.

After breakfast, we will begin a three-hour, moderate-level hike toward the Upis campsite (14,435 ft / 4,400 m). Throughout the trek, you will walk alongside our llama caravan, enjoying a unique perspective of the Andean valleys and the imposing presence of the Ausangate Glacier. Upon arriving at the camp, our team will welcome you with a nutritious and revitalizing lunch specifically designed for high-altitude energy.

In the afternoon, after a refreshing nap, we will head out on a two-hour exploratory hike to the crystal-clear Upis Lagoon (14,763 ft / 4,500 m), located at the foot of the sacred mountain. Day 5: The Grand Finale – Machu Picchu – Cusco

Finally, the wait is over! The time has finally come to visit the Wonder of the World.

After an early breakfast at your hotel, the most anticipated day begins. We handle all the logistics: you will only carry your daypack with the essentials while your hotel in Aguas Calientes (6,693 ft / 2,040 m) safely stores your main luggage. You will take the Consettur bus for a scenic 25-minute ascent up the mountain, which brings you directly to the entrance of the legend.

Once inside the Inca Citadel of Machu Picchu (7,972 ft / 2,430 m), the magic begins. Your expert Ali Perú Treks guide will lead you on a comprehensive tour. We have secured Circuit 2 for you, widely considered the most complete and classic route. First, your guide will take you to the best viewpoints so you can capture the iconic, postcard-perfect photo of Machu Picchu. Afterward, you will discover the secrets, history, and astonishing architecture of the Inca Empire, exploring the main temples, sacred plazas, and urban sectors.

Optional: Huayna Picchu Mountain If you reserved the add-on ticket, this is your moment for the legendary climb up Huayna Picchu Mountain (8,835 ft / 2,693 m). It is a challenging hike that offers unparalleled aerial views of the citadel. (Must be booked months in advance).

After the tour, we recommend taking the bus back down to Aguas Calientes at least 2 hours before your train departure. Your return train journey to Ollantaytambo will take you back through the Sacred Valley. Packing List

To ensure a comfortable and safe journey through the high-altitude wilderness and the sacred sanctuary of Machu Picchu, we have prepared this essential guide. Proper preparation is the key to enjoying the majesty of the Apu Ausangate.

The Essentials (Must be in your Daypack)

These items must be with you at all times during the hike:

  • Original Passport: You must carry the physical original document used for your booking.
  • Professional Daypack: A 25L to 30L backpack is ideal. (Note: Large hiking packs over 40L are not allowed inside Machu Picchu).
  • Water Storage: 2–3 Liters capacity. Reusable bottles or Camelbaks are mandatory to support our sustainability commitment.
  • Hiking Boots: Sturdy, waterproof, and well broken-in footwear with excellent ankle support and grip.
  • Rain Protection: A high-quality rain poncho or waterproof jacket (mountain weather is unpredictable).
  • Headlamp: Essential for navigating the high-mountain campsites at Pucacocha and Queullaqocha.
  • Personal Cash: Small denominations in Peruvian Soles for tips and local snacks.

The Duffel Bag (Carried by our Llama/Horse Team)

Ali Perú Treks provides you with a duffel bag during your briefing. We INCLUDE a team of horses and llamas to carry up to 7 kg (15 lbs) of your belongings.

Note on Animal Welfare: Duffel bag weights are strictly controlled. If you rent a sleeping bag (approx. 2 kg), it stays inside the bag, leaving you 5 kg for your personal clothing.

Inside your Duffel Bag:

  • Clothing: 3 moisture-wicking t-shirts, 2 pairs of hiking pants, 4 sets of undergarments, 4 pairs of thermal wool socks.
  • The Layering System: Thermals (base layer), fleece (mid-layer), and a heavy down jacket (outer layer). Temperatures at Pucacocha and Queullaqocha can drop significantly below freezing (14°F / -10°C).
  • Extreme Cold Protection: Waterproof gloves and a warm wool hat (Chullo) are mandatory for crossing the Arapa and Apuchata passes.
  • Camp Shoes: Comfortable sneakers or sandals to allow your feet to breathe at the campsite.
  • Sleeping Bag: Rated for at least -15°C / 5°F (Available for rent at Ali Perú Treks).
  • Hygiene Kit: Quick-dry towel, toothbrush, hand sanitizer, and biodegradable wet wipes.
  • Sun & Skin Care: Sunscreen (SPF 50+), lip balm, and moisturizer (the Andean air at 5,000m is extremely dry).
  • Power Bank: Essential for charging your camera/phone; there is no electricity for the first 3 nights.

Strategic Items for the High Andes

Keep these handy in your daypack, as you will not have access to your duffel bag during the day:

  • First Morning Water: Please bring your own water for the first 4 hours; we provide boiled/purified water from the first lunch onwards.
  • High-Energy Snacks: Trail mix, energy bars, chocolate, or coca leaves to help with energy during the high passes.

  • Personal Medical Kit: Band-aids, moleskin for blisters, personal prescriptions, and pain relief.

Travel Info

Travel Information

Trekking through the Ausangate massif is one of the most rewarding experiences on Earth, but it is also among the most physically demanding due to the extreme altitude. At Ali Perú Treks, your health and safety are our absolute priorities.

Mandatory Acclimatization (3 to 4 Days)

Because this route consistently stays above 14,000 ft (4,200 m) and crosses mountain passes reaching 16,500 ft (5,030 m), your body requires biological time to adjust.

  • Requirement: We strictly recommend staying in the city of Cusco (11,152 ft / 3,400 m) or the Sacred Valley for at least 3 to 4 days before starting this tour.
  • Pro Tip: Spend your first two days on low-effort activities (such as a City Tour or salt mines) and use the third day for a moderate practice hike (like Pisac or Chinchero) to prepare your lungs for the glacial air.

Health & Altitude Sickness (Soroche)

Altitude affects everyone differently, regardless of age or physical condition.

  • Symptoms: It is common to experience mild headaches, nausea, or loss of appetite during the first few hours at high altitude.
  • Prevention: Stay hydrated (3 liters of water per day), avoid heavy meals, and limit alcohol and caffeine before the trek.
  • Medication: Consult your doctor about using Acetazolamide (Diamox). Our team provides medical oxygen and pulse oximeters at all times, along with traditional coca tea at every campsite.

Physical Preparation

You do not need to be an elite athlete, but you must be in good cardiovascular health and have solid endurance for multi-day hiking.

  • Training: We recommend cardio exercises (stair climbing, swimming, or long walks) at least 4 to 6 weeks before your arrival.

The Pace: This is not a race. Our guides use an “Expedition Pace”—short, steady steps—to ensure your oxygen levels remain stable. Our llama caravan sets a rhythmic, peaceful pace that helps you connect with the landscape.

Climate & Extreme Temperatures

The weather in the high Andes is highly unpredictable. You will experience “four seasons in one day.”

  • Daytime: It can be sunny and pleasant (up to 60°F / 15°C), but UV radiation is extremely strong.
  • Nighttime: Temperatures at our high-altitude camps (Pucacocha and Queullaqocha) drop drastically below freezing, ranging between 14°F and -4°F (-10°C to -20°C).
  • Best Time to Visit: To guarantee clear views of the glaciers and the Rainbow Mountain, the ideal season is from April to October (Dry Season).

Safety Standards at Ali Perú Treks

As a direct local operator, we go beyond the standard:

  • Emergency Horse: Always included to support hikers during the high passes.
  • Satellite Communication: We carry satellite phones to ensure contact even in the most remote glacial valleys.
  • Expert Staff: Our guides are certified, ensuring you are in the most capable hands in the Andes.

Faqs

Frequently asked questions

How difficult is this trek exactly?

This route is rated as Challenging. The difficulty is not due to technical climbing, but rather the sustained high altitude. You will be trekking above 14,000 ft (4,200 m) for four days and crossing passes over 16,500 ft. It is ideal for travelers in good physical condition with a strong, positive mindset.

Is pre-acclimatization mandatory?

Yes. For your safety, we strictly require a minimum of 3 to 4 days of acclimatization in Cusco or the Sacred Valley. Attempting this route without proper adjustment significantly increases the risk of altitude-related health issues.

What happens if I can’t keep up with the group’s pace?

Our guides use an “Expedition Pace”—short, steady steps. If you need to go slower, a guide or assistant will stay with you at all times. We also provide emergency horses along the entire mountain route for support if you experience fatigue.

What happens if I get altitude sickness (Soroche)?

Safety is our top priority. Our guides are Wilderness First Responder (WFR) certified and always carry medical-grade oxygen tanks and pulse oximeters. If symptoms are mild, we adjust the pace; if they become severe, we activate immediate evacuation protocols.

Is the water safe to drink?

Absolutely. We collect water from Andean springs, then boil and filter it to ensure it is 100% safe. You do not need purification tablets, but you must bring reusable bottles or CamelBaks.

Why do you use llamas instead of mules?

At Ali Perú Treks, we prioritize sustainability. Llamas are native to the Andes and have padded feet that cause much less soil erosion than mules. Furthermore, our llama caravan directly supports local herding families, preserving ancestral traditions.

How much weight can the llamas carry for me?

We provide a Duffel Bag where you can pack 7 kg (15 lbs) of your personal gear (clothing, sleeping bag). This is carried by our caravan, allowing you to hike with only a light daypack.

Is there electricity to charge my devices?

There is no electricity at the mountain campsites. Extreme cold drains batteries quickly, so you must bring a high-capacity Power Bank and keep your devices inside your sleeping bag at night to conserve charge.

What is the accommodation like?

The trek includes 3 nights of high-mountain camping in professional 4-season tents and 1 night in a 3-star hotel in Aguas Calientes.

Are there bathrooms and showers?

In the high mountains, hot showers are not available. We provide a private toilet tent with an eco-friendly portable toilet for our group’s exclusive use. Every morning and afternoon, we provide basins of warm water for your personal hygiene.

Can you accommodate special diets?

Yes. We accommodate vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, and specific allergy requirements at no additional cost. Please inform us at the time of booking.

What is the Ali Perú Treks “Happy Hour”?

Upon arriving at each camp, we celebrate the day’s success with Tea Time. We serve hot drinks (coffee, chocolate, local teas) and warm snacks like popcorn or local appetizers before dinner.

Will we arrive at Rainbow Mountain before the crowds?

Yes. Thanks to our strategic camp at Queullaqocha, we arrive at Vinicunca around 6:30 AM. This allows you to enjoy the mountain in total serenity, long before the mass of tour buses arrives from Cusco.

How do we get to Machu Picchu on the final day?

After descending from the mountains and taking the train on Day 4, you will stay in a hotel in Aguas Calientes. On Day 5, we take one of the first buses up to Machu Picchu to witness the sunrise and enjoy a premium guided tour of the citadel.

When is the best time to do this tour?

The dry season (April to October) offers the clearest skies and best views of the glaciers. However, these are also the coldest months at night, so proper layering is essential.
