Ausangate Trek 4 Days to Rainbow Mountain

Embark on the ultimate Ausangate Trek 4 days to Rainbow Mountain — one of the most breathtaking high-altitude adventures in the Peruvian Andes. Unlike standard day trips from Cusco, this 4-day journey takes you deep into the remote Vilcanota mountain range, circling the sacred Apu Ausangate (6,384 m) through a landscape of turquoise glacial lakes, ancient Quechua villages, and the iconic mineral-striped slopes of Rainbow Mountain (Vinicunca).

At Ali Peru Treks, we revive an ancestral Inca tradition by using llamas as our primary pack animals — a sustainable, ethical approach that protects the mountain trails while connecting you to centuries of Andean culture. What sets this Ausangate Rainbow Mountain trek apart is our strategic campsite at Queullaqocha — positioned just 45 minutes from Vinicunca — guaranteeing you reach the summit of Rainbow Mountain before the day-trip crowds arrive from Cusco.

Overview

Complete Guide to the Ausangate Trek 4 Days & Rainbow Mountain

In the afternoon, the choice is yours: explore the pristine Upis Lake or soak in the natural hot springs. You’ll wrap up the day with a dinner before settling into our comfortable tents right in front of the stunning Ausangate Peak.

DAY 2: UPIS – ARAPA PASS – PUCACOCHA

After a traditional Andean breakfast, we will ascend to Arapa Pass (15,912 ft) alongside our llama caravan, enjoying panoramic views of the Ausangate massif. We’ll then descend to the Pucacocha lagoons for a gourmet lunch and set up our exclusive campsite directly facing the glaciers. The afternoon is yours for photography or meditation, ending with a night under the moonlight in the presence of the sacred Apu.

DAY 3: PUCACOCHA – APUCHATA PASS – ANANTA – QUEULLAQOCHA

After conquering Apuchata Pass (16,076 ft) accompanied by our llama caravan, we’ll descend to the Ananta Valley for a gourmet lunch in a pristine wilderness setting. Finally, we’ll arrive at the Queullaqocha lagoon, where we’ll set up our exclusive campsite in a remote area—perfect for enjoying the peace of the mountains and an unforgettable starry sky.

Key Points About the 4 Day Ausangate Trek

Learn how the Incas utilized llamas as the primary means of cargo transport throughout their vast empire; today, at Ali Perú Treks, we continue to honor that millennial tradition. For the ancient Quechua people, the llama was more than just an animal; it was a connection to Pachamama (Mother Earth) and a fundamental pillar of the Tawantinsuyu logistics. Following that legacy, we have revived the ancestral caravan to offer you an expedition that combines mysticism, untouched nature, and absolute environmental respect.

  • Traditional Llama Caravan: Experience the trail the ancestral way, using eco-friendly llamas to haul our gear through the rugged Andean terrain.
  • Apu Ausangate Views: Get up close and personal with the highest peak in the Cusco region, a sacred deity in Andean Cosmovision.
  • Exclusive Backcountry Camping: Spend your nights under a brilliant canopy of stars in remote campsites, far away from the typical tourist crowds.
  • Early Access to Vinicunca: Reach the summit of Rainbow Mountain at the break of dawn to witness the vibrant colors before the masses arrive.
  • Pristine Glacial Lakes & Rainbow Peaks: Marvel at the neon-blue waters of Pucacocha and Chillca, and stand in awe before the surreal, multi-hued slopes of the legendary Rainbow Mountain.

We begin our journey by ascending toward Apuchata Pass (16,076 ft / 4,900 m); upon reaching the summit, you will be rewarded with spectacular 360-degree views of turquoise lagoons shimmering at the foot of the massif. Accompanied by our traditional llama caravan, we descend into the Ananta Valley (15,420 ft / 4,700 m) for our lunch break, where our chef will serve a restorative gourmet meal.

The Ali Perú Treks Strategic Advantage: This location is a masterpiece of logistics. Thanks to our strategic camp at Queulla Ccocha, we have a privileged head start.

We will begin a short, final hike toward the legendary Rainbow Mountain (Vinicunca), reaching the summit at 16,502 ft (5,030 m) long before the mass of crowds arriving from Cusco. Packing List

What to Pack for the Ausangate Trek 4 Days

At Ali Perú Treks, your safety and comfort in one of the most challenging and breathtaking landscapes in the Andes are our top priorities. As a 100% Direct Local Operator, we have optimized our logistics so you can focus on the awe-inspiring views while we handle the heavy lifting.

Ali Perú Exclusive Logistics

During your mandatory pre-trek briefing, we will provide you with a 7 kg (15 lbs) Duffel Bag.

  • Freedom on the Trail: Our traditional llama caravan and horsemen will transport this bag throughout the entire journey. You only need to carry a small daypack with your essentials.
  • Daily Access: You will have access to your duffel bag every afternoon upon arriving at the campsite.
  • Safety First: Trekking with a light daypack significantly improves your balance on mountain passes and reduces physical fatigue at extreme altitudes.

 Your Daypack

A 25L to 35L backpack is recommended. These items stay with you during the hike:

  • Original Passport: (Mandatory) Required for permits and checkpoints.
  • Hydration: Minimum 2.5 to 3 liters. We highly recommend CamelBaks or reusable bottles (Zero-Plastic Policy). Proper hydration is your best defense against altitude sickness.
  • Layering System:
    • A high-quality waterproof jacket or rain poncho.
    • A lightweight mid-layer (fleece or thin down vest) for quick breaks.
  • Total Sun Protection: SPF 50+ sunscreen, lip balm with SPF (the air is very dry), a wide-brimmed hat, and UV-protection sunglasses.
  • Personal Medical Kit: Specific prescriptions and altitude medication (soroche pills).
  • Energy Snacks: Dried fruits, protein bars, or chocolates (while we provide gourmet snacks, it’s always good to have your personal favorites).
  • Tech Gear: Camera and Power Bank. Pro Tip: Extreme cold drains batteries quickly; keep them inside your jacket close to your body.

Your 8 kg Duffel Bag (Carried by Llamas)

Items for the campsite and nighttime:

  • Extreme Cold Weather Gear (Essential):
    • A technical Down Jacket (rated for 14°F / -10°C).
    • Thermal or windproof trekking pants.
    • Thermal base layers (Merino wool is highly recommended) for sleeping and cold mornings.
  • Thermal Accessories: Wool hat (chullo), thermal/waterproof gloves, and neck gaiters or buffs.
  • Camp Footwear: Sandals or light sneakers to wear around the camp, allowing your feet to rest and breathe.
  • Complete Toiletry Kit: Biodegradable wet wipes, toothbrush, toothpaste, and deodorant.
  • Sleeping Bag: If not renting from us, ensure yours is rated for 5°F to -4°F (-15°C to -20°C).

Professional Equipment Recommendations

  • Footwear: Gore-Tex (Waterproof) hiking boots with mid-to-high ankle support are mandatory for uneven glacial terrain. Never wear brand-new boots on this trek.
  • Trekking Poles: Highly Recommended. These are essential for balancing effort during the steep ascents to Apacheta and Warmisaya passes and protecting your knees during long descents.
  • Headlamp: Indispensable for moving around camp at night and for our early morning start toward Rainbow Mountain on Day 4.

The “Photo Look”: We suggest packing a vibrant-colored shirt (red, orange, or yellow) to contrast beautifully against the colors of the Rainbow Mountain and the Red Valley.

Travel Info

Essential Travel Information for the Ausangate Trek 4 Days

Trekking through the Ausangate massif is one of the most rewarding experiences in the world, but it is also among the most physically demanding due to the extreme altitude. At Ali Perú Treks, your health and safety are our absolute priorities.

Mandatory Acclimatization (3 to 4 Days)

Because this route consistently stays above 14,000 ft (4,200 m) and crosses mountain passes reaching 16,500 ft (5,030 m), your body requires biological time to adjust.

  • Requirement: We strictly recommend staying in the city of Cusco (11,152 ft / 3,400 m) or the Sacred Valley for at least 3 to 4 days before starting this tour.
  • Pro Tip: Spend your first two days on low-effort activities (such as a City Tour or cultural visits) and use the third day for a practice hike (like Pisac or Chinchero) to prepare your lungs.

Health & Altitude Sickness (Soroche)

Altitude affects everyone differently, regardless of age or excellent physical condition.

  • Symptoms: It is common to experience mild headaches, nausea, dizziness, or loss of appetite during your first few hours at high altitude.
  • Prevention: Stay hydrated (drink at least 3 liters of water per day), avoid heavy meals, and limit alcohol and caffeine consumption before the trek.
  • Medication: Consult your doctor about using Acetazolamide (Diamox/Soroche Pills). At each of our campsites, we provide coca tea, a highly effective natural ancestral remedy.

Physical Preparation

You do not need to be an elite athlete, but you must be in good cardiovascular health and have solid endurance.

  • Training: We recommend cardio exercises such as stair climbing, swimming, or hiking in your home country at least 4 weeks before your arrival.
  • The Pace: Remember, this is not a race. Our guides use an “Expedition Pace”—short, steady steps—to ensure your oxygen and energy levels remain stable throughout the day.

Climate & Extreme Temperatures

The weather in the high Andes is highly unpredictable, even during the dry season.

  • Daytime: It can be sunny and pleasant (up to 60°F / 15°C), but UV radiation is extremely strong due to the altitude.
  • Nighttime: Temperatures drop drastically below freezing, ranging between 14°F and -4°F (-10°C to -20°C).

Best Time to Visit: To guarantee the best experience and clear views, the ideal season is from April to October (Dry Season).

How to Get to the Ausangate Trek Trailhead from Cusco

The Ausangate Trek begins at Upis Village (4,150 m), approximately 3.5 hours by road from Cusco city center. Ali Peru Treks provides private door-to-door transportation from your hotel in Cusco, departing at 5:00 AM on Day 1.

The route follows the highway toward Puerto Maldonado, passing through the market town of Ocongate and the village of Tinki — where we make a brief stop for any last-minute supplies — before continuing 30 minutes on a dirt road to the trailhead.

Independent travelers can reach Tinki by taking the Siwar bus from Coliseo Cerrado (Casa de la Juventud), departing every 20 minutes from 4:00 AM, but no public transport continues to Upis. We strongly recommend arriving at the trailhead with a tour operator for safety and logistical support.

Permits & Entrance Fees for Rainbow Mountain and Ausangate

Unlike the Inca Trail, the Ausangate Trek does not require a permit issued months in advance — making it an excellent alternative for travelers with a flexible itinerary. However, two separate entrance fees are required and must be paid at the trailhead:

one for the Ausangate Natural Reserve and a second community fee for access to Rainbow Mountain Vinicunca, collected by the local Quechua farming communities who administer and maintain the area.

Both fees are fully included in the Ali Peru Treks tour price. There is no quota limit on Ausangate trekkers, but Rainbow Mountain is increasingly busy between June and August — another reason why our campsite at Queullaqocha gives you a decisive advantage: we summit before the entrance is crowded.

Travel Insurance: Is It Required for the Ausangate Trek?

Yes. Travel insurance is mandatory for all Ali Peru Treks departures and must cover high-altitude trekking (above 5,000 m) and emergency helicopter evacuation. The Ausangate region is extremely remote — in a genuine medical emergency, the only way out is by helicopter or a multi-hour evacuation on horseback.

Evacuation flights from this area can cost between $3,000 and $10,000 USD without insurance coverage. Policies that cover adventures above 4,000 m are offered by World Nomads, SafetyWing and Battleface, among others.

Please send proof of insurance to our team before your departure briefing. Do not rely on standard travel insurance policies — verify explicitly that high-altitude trekking and helicopter evacuation are covered.

Responsible Tourism & Environmental Policy on the Ausangate Trek

The Ausangate wilderness is one of the most pristine and ecologically sensitive environments in the Andes. Ali Peru Treks operates under a strict Leave No Trace policy: all waste — including food scraps, packaging and human waste from portable toilets — is packed out and returned to Cusco for proper disposal.

We use llamas instead of horses or mules specifically because their padded feet cause significantly less trail erosion than shod hooves. We purchase food locally from Quechua producers in the communities along the route, and our guides are native Quechua speakers who contribute directly to the local economy. Campfire use is prohibited above 4,500 m.

We ask all trekkers to respect the “no single-use plastic” policy on trail — bring a reusable water bottle and use the water purification system provided at each camp.

When is the best time to do this tour?

The dry season, from April to October, is the best time due to clear skies. However, these are also the coldest months at night.

Map

Ausangate Trek Route Map & Elevation Profile

Below you’ll find two detailed maps of our 4-Day Ausangate Trek to Rainbow Mountain Peru. The first map shows the complete trekking route from Cusco to Cusco, giving hikers a clear overview of the entire journey through the Andes.

The second map features the Ausangate elevation profile, including daily hiking distances, estimated trekking times, and altitude changes at every key point along the route. These maps are designed to help travelers better understand the terrain, altitude, and overall difficulty of this spectacular high-altitude trek in Peru.

The trek begins at 4,150 m in Upis and reaches its highest point at Palomani Pass (5,100 m), making it one of the most challenging and rewarding multi-day hikes in the Cusco region. On the final day, hikers reach the iconic Rainbow Mountain (Vinicunca) at 5,020 m before returning to Cusco by private transport.

Due to the extreme altitude, we strongly recommend spending at least 3 to 4 days acclimatizing in Cusco (3,399 m) before starting the trek.

Faqs

Frequently Asked Questions About the Ausangate Trek 4 Days

This route is rated as Challenging. The difficulty is not due to technical hiking (no climbing skills are required), but rather the sustained high altitude. You will be trekking above 13,000 ft (4,000 m) for four days and sleeping in freezing environments. It is ideal for travelers in good physical condition and, above all, with a positive mindset.

A Rainbow Mountain day trip and the 4-day Ausangate Trek are fundamentally different experiences. A day trip means 4–5 hours of driving for a 1.5-hour summit push surrounded by hundreds of other tourists — spectacular, but rushed.

The Ausangate Trek gives you four days deep inside the Vilcanota range, crossing passes that most visitors never see, sleeping beneath glaciers, and reaching Rainbow Mountain in solitude.

If you have 4 days available and are in reasonable physical condition, the Ausangate circuit is objectively the superior experience — and seeing Vinicunca as the final reward of a multi-day journey rather than the only attraction of a day trip makes it infinitely more meaningful.

We usually wake up at 5:00 or 5:30 AM with a hot cup of tea served directly to your tent to take advantage of the best weather conditions in the morning.

Safety is our top priority. Our guides are Wilderness First Responder (WFR) certified and always carry medical-grade oxygen tanks and a comprehensive first aid kit. If symptoms are mild, we adjust the pace; if they become severe, we activate immediate evacuation protocols.

This trek is not recommended for first-time trekkers with zero hiking experience. The altitude alone — never dropping below 4,400 m — requires a body that has been trained and acclimatized. That said, many of our trekkers are not experienced mountaineers: they are fit travelers who prepared properly.

If you can complete a 3-hour hike at home without difficulty and you commit to 3–4 days of acclimatization in Cusco before departure, you have a very good chance of completing this trek successfully. We encourage you to contact us to discuss your specific fitness level — we will give you an honest assessment of whether this trek is right for you right now.

Because the Ausangate Trek reaches elevations above 5,000 m (16,400 ft), proper acclimatization is essential before starting the expedition. We strongly recommend spending at least 3 to 4 days in Cusco (3,399 m / 11,152 ft) before the trek begins.

This adjustment period helps your body adapt to the altitude and significantly reduces the risk of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS).

To acclimatize properly before the trek, we recommend:

    • Drinking plenty of water throughout the day.

    • Avoiding alcohol during your first days in Cusco.

    • Eating light meals and resting well.

    • Taking short hikes around Cusco or the Sacred Valley.

    • Consulting your doctor about altitude medication if necessary.

Many travelers use the first few days in Cusco to explore nearby destinations such as Humantay Lake, the Sacred Valley, or Machu Picchu before taking on the challenging Ausangate Trek to Rainbow Mountain.

The highest point reached during the Ausangate Trek 4 Days is approximately 5,100 m (16,732 ft) above sea level at Palomani Pass, one of the most spectacular viewpoints in the Peruvian Andes.

Other major high-altitude points along the trek include:

    • Rainbow Mountain (Vinicunca): 5,020 m / 16,466 ft

    • Apuchata Pass: 4,900 m / 16,076 ft

    • Arapa Pass: 4,850 m / 15,912 ft

    • Queullaqocha Campsite: 4,800 m / 15,748 ft

Due to these extreme elevations, the Ausangate Trek is considered one of the highest and most demanding multi-day treks in Peru. Proper acclimatization, hydration, and physical preparation are essential for a safe and enjoyable experience.

Yes — trekking poles are highly recommended for the Ausangate Trek due to the steep ascents, rocky terrain, and extreme high-altitude conditions throughout the route.

They help improve balance, reduce impact on your knees during long descents, and provide extra stability on uneven mountain trails, especially above 5,000 m (16,400 ft).

Trekking poles become especially useful during the climbs to Arapa Pass, Apuchata Pass, and the final ascent to Rainbow Mountain and Red Valley.

If you do not have your own equipment, Ali Perú Treks offers professional trekking pole rentals before the expedition begins.

It is one of our best surprises! Our mountain chef prepares gourmet meals using fresh ingredients. The menu includes nutritious options such as quinoa, fresh vegetables, and lean meats.

Yes. We can accommodate vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free diets or specific allergies at no additional cost. Just let us know at the time of booking.

What happens if I can’t keep up with the group’s pace?

Our guides use an “expedition pace”—short, steady steps. If you need to go slower, the guide or an assistant will remain with you at all times. We also provide emergency horses along the entire route just in case.

Is drinking water provided during the Ausangate Trek?

Absolutely. We collect water from Andean springs, then boil and filter it carefully to ensure it is 100% safe. You do not need to bring purification tablets, but you must bring reusable bottles or CamelBaks.

Why do you use llamas instead of mules or horses?

At Ali Perú Treks, we are committed to sustainability and cultural identity. Llamas are native Andean animals with padded feet that cause significantly less soil erosion than mules’ hooves. Furthermore, our traditional llama caravan directly supports the local herding economy.

How much luggage can the llamas carry?

We provide a Duffel Bag where you can pack 8 kg (15 lbs) of your personal gear (clothes, sleeping bag). This bag is carried by our caravan, allowing you to hike with only a light daypack.

Is there electricity to charge my phone or camera?

There is no electricity at the campsites. Extreme cold drains batteries quickly, so you must bring a high-capacity Power Bank and keep your devices inside your sleeping bag at night to conserve charge.

What equipment can I rent from you?

We offer professional trekking poles with rubber tips for $15 USD and technical down sleeping bags rated for 5°F (-15°C) for $20 USD.

How cold does it get at night?

The weather is freezing. Temperatures regularly drop to 14°F or 5°F (-10°C to -15°C). Because of this, we provide professional 4-season tents and high-quality inflatable thermal pads to protect you from the cold ground.

Are there bathrooms and showers at the campsites?

At these altitudes, hot showers are not available. We provide a private toilet tent with an eco-friendly portable toilet for our group’s exclusive use. Additionally, we provide basins of warm water every morning and afternoon for your personal hygiene.

What is the Ali Perú Treks “Happy Hour”?

Upon arriving at each camp, we celebrate the day’s success with tea time. We serve hot drinks (coffee, chocolate, local teas) and warm snacks like popcorn or fried wontons.

Is there cell service or Wi-Fi?

No. This route is an opportunity for a total digital detox. There will be no cell signal for 95% of the journey.

Will we arrive at Rainbow Mountain before the crowds?

Yes. Thanks to our strategic camp at Queulla Ccocha, we arrive at Vinicunca around 6:30 AM. This allows you to enjoy the mountain in near solitude, long before the tour buses from Cusco arrive.

What is the minimum age for the Ausangate Trek?

The minimum age for the Ausangate Trek with Ali Peru Treks is 14 years old, with parental accompaniment required for trekkers under 18. Children and teenagers are generally more susceptible to altitude sickness than adults, and the combination of extreme altitude (above 5,100 m) and remote location demands careful consideration.

We do not recommend this trek for children under 14 regardless of fitness level. Adults over 60 are welcome with a doctor’s clearance letter confirming cardiovascular fitness for high-altitude trekking.

If you are traveling with young teenagers, contact us to discuss whether this specific itinerary is appropriate, or whether we can suggest a better-matched alternative.

What is your cancellation and refund policy?

We understand that travel plans change. Cancellations made more than 30 days before departure receive a full refund minus a 10% administrative fee. Cancellations between 15 and 30 days before departure receive a 50% refund.

Cancellations within 14 days of departure are non-refundable, but the full amount can be applied as a credit toward a future departure within 12 months. Cancellations due to documented medical reasons are handled on a case-by-case basis.

In the event that Ali Peru Treks cancels a departure due to weather, natural events or circumstances beyond our control, we offer a full reschedule or a full refund. We strongly recommend travel insurance that covers trip cancellation to protect your investment.
