Travel Info
Travel Information
At Ali Perú Treks, we understand that a journey to the remote Andes requires meticulous planning. Below is everything you need to know to ensure your expedition is seamless, safe, and extraordinary.
Physical Preparation & Altitude
The Luxury Ancascocha Trek is considered one of the more challenging routes due to its elevation.
- Aclimatization: We strictly recommend arriving in Cusco at least 2 to 3 days before your trek. This allows your body to adjust to the 11,150 ft (3,400 m) altitude of the city.
- Fitness Level: You should be in good physical condition. While our pace is “mindful” and designed for enjoyment, you will be hiking for 6 to 9 hours a day on uneven terrain.
High-Altitude Wellness & Safety
Your safety is our absolute priority. Our protocols exceed international standards:
- Oxygen & First Aid: Every expedition carries medical-grade oxygen tanks and a comprehensive wilderness first aid kit.
- Health Monitoring: Our guides perform daily checks using pulse oximeters to monitor your oxygen saturation and heart rate.
- Emergency Support: A dedicated emergency horse follows the group at all times. If you feel fatigued or unwell, you can ride safely until you recover.
The Weather in the Andes
Weather in the mountains is unpredictable and can change in minutes:
- Dry Season (May – September): Clear skies and sunny days, but nights are freezing (below 32°F / 0°C).
- Shoulder Season (April & October): Beautiful greenery with a moderate chance of passing rain.
Layering is Key: Even on sunny days, the wind at the passes is cold. Always keep your fleece and windbreaker in your daypack.
Luggage Management
- Main Luggage: Most travelers leave their large suitcases at their hotel in Cusco. All hotels offer free, secure luggage storage for guests.
- The Duffel Bag: We provide you with a high-durability bag for your 10 kg (22 lbs) of gear. This bag is carried by our horses and will be waiting for you at each campsite.
- Daypack: You only carry a small backpack with essentials (water, camera, sunblock, rain jacket).
Ethical & Sustainable Travel
Choosing Ali Perú Treks means you are supporting responsible tourism:
- Fair Wages: We take pride in paying our porters, horsemen, and chefs wages that are significantly above the industry average.
- Plastic-Free: We provide purified water throughout the trek. We kindly ask you to bring reusable bottles or a Camelbak to minimize waste.
- Leave No Trace: We carry all waste back to Cusco for proper disposal, ensuring the Ancascocha trail remains as pristine as we found it.
Entrance Permits & Huayna Picchu
The Peruvian government has strict quotas for Machu Picchu:
- Booking in Advance: We recommend booking at least 4 to 5 months early to secure the best circuits.
- Huayna Picchu: If you wish to climb the iconic peak, let us know at the time of booking. It requires a specific permit that sells out very quickly.
Connectivity & Electricity
- Digital Detox: There is no cell service or Wi-Fi for the first 3.5 days of the trek. This is a rare opportunity to disconnect and immerse yourself in nature.
- Charging: We provide solar-powered charging stations at our luxury camps, but we still recommend bringing a high-capacity power bank for your personal electronics.

Faqs
Frequently asked questions
Is the Ancascocha Trek more difficult than the Classic Inca Trail?
Yes, it is considered more challenging because it reaches a higher altitude (15,255 ft vs. 13,828 ft) and involves steeper ascents. However, our luxury pace and professional support make it accessible for fit hikers.
How many people will be in my group?
We specialize in private and small-group expeditions. Typically, our luxury groups range from 2 to 8 travelers to ensure personalized service and total exclusivity.
Do I really sleep on a bed in the mountains
Absolutely. We provide professional, elevated trekking cots with deluxe mattresses and high-quality linens. You will not be sleeping on the ground or on thin foam pads.
Is there a private shower available at the campsites?
Yes. We set up a private, heated shower tent at every campsite (Days 1, 2, and 3). You can enjoy a hot wash in total privacy amidst the wilderness.
What kind of toilets do you provide on the trail?
We use eco-friendly, portable chemical toilets with a water-pump system. These are set up in private tents at every lunch spot and campsite for your comfort and hygiene.
Can the massage therapist handle specific injuries?
Our therapists are trained in sports and relaxation massage specifically for hikers. While they focus on muscle recovery, please inform us of any pre-existing injuries during your briefing.
What happens if I cannot keep up with the group’s pace?
There is no rush. We provide a dedicated emergency horse that follows the group at all times. If you feel fatigued or affected by the altitude, you can ride safely for as long as needed.
Is the water safe to drink during the trek?
We provide unlimited water that has been boiled, filtered, and purified by our team. We often infuse it with electrolytes or local herbs to help with hydration and altitude.
Are the meals suitable for someone with severe allergies?
Our master chefs are experts in dietary management. Whether you are vegan, gluten-free, or have specific nut/shellfish allergies, we curate a bespoke menu for you with no cross-contamination.
Do I need to bring my own sleeping bag?
No. Because we provide real beds with specialized thermal duvets and linens, a traditional sleeping bag is not necessary. We ensure you stay warm even when temperatures drop.
Will I have cell phone service or Wi-Fi?
There is no signal for the first three days of the trek. This is a “digital detox” experience. You will regain connectivity once you reach Aguas Calientes on Day 4.
Can I charge my camera and phone?
We provide solar-powered charging stations in our social tents. However, we still recommend bringing a personal power bank to ensure your devices are always ready for photos.
Is the Inkaterra hotel stay guaranteed?
We always book the Inkaterra Machu Picchu Pueblo Hotel for our luxury tours. In the rare case of no availability, we provide an equivalent 5-star luxury property like the Sumaq or Belmond.
Which Machu Picchu circuit is included?
We guarantee Circuit 2 (The Classic Route), which is the most comprehensive. It allows you to see the classic postcard view and explore the Main Temple, the Sacred Plaza, and the Intihuatana.
Is the Vistadome train different from the regular train?
Yes. The Vistadome features panoramic windows, more legroom, live cultural shows, and gourmet snacks, providing a much more immersive journey through the valley.
What is the best month to book this luxury trek?
The dry season from May to September offers the clearest views of the glaciers and the best trail conditions. April and October are also beautiful but have a higher chance of mist.
Do I need a permit for Huayna Picchu?
Yes, it is a separate permit. If you wish to climb it, you must request it at the time of booking. It is not included in the standard trek price and is subject to government availability.
What is your policy on environmental impact?
We follow “Leave No Trace” principles. We use no single-use plastics, provide biodegradable soaps, and carry all waste including organic out of the mountains back to Cusco.
Is travel insurance really mandatory?
Yes. Given the remote nature of the Ancascocha route and the high altitude.
Should I bring my own power bank if you provide charging stations?
Yes, we strongly recommend bringing a high-capacity power bank (at least 10,000 to 20,000 mAh). While our luxury camps feature solar-powered charging stations in the social tents, solar energy can be inconsistent depending on weather conditions and cloud cover at high altitudes. Having your own power bank ensures your camera, phone, and watch remain fully charged for capturing every moment of the trek without relying solely on the mountain’s sun.
