Why You Should Hike the 1-Day Inca Trail with Ali Peru Treks

Hiking the 1-day Inca Trail with Ali Peru Treks offers a unique opportunity to experience the magic of Machu Picchu in an authentic and responsible way. This option is ideal for travelers with limited time who don’t want to miss the experience of reaching the Inca citadel on foot, and choosing a local agency like Ali Peru Treks significantly enriches this adventure.

Here are the details on why you should consider this combination:

A Mystical Experience in Less Time

The 1-day hike, also known as the Short Inca Trail, condenses the most important highlights of the legendary trail into an intense and rewarding journey.

  • Scenic Route: The hike begins at KM 104 and takes you through breathtaking landscapes, including a visit to the fascinating archaeological site of Wiñay Wayna («Forever Young»), known for its stunning Inca terraces and structures.
  • The Sun Gate (Inti Punku): The climax of the trail is arriving at the Sun Gate, the original entrance to Machu Picchu used by the Incas. From here, you will get the first panoramic and unforgettable view of the citadel—an exciting reward for your effort.
  • An Intense Adventure: In approximately 6 hours of moderate hiking (about 7.5-8 miles), you will experience the essence of the Andes, surrounded by lush cloud forest vegetation and spectacular mountain views.

The Added Value of Choosing Ali Peru Treks

Opting for Ali Peru Treks for this hike provides benefits that go beyond the trail itself, ensuring a deeper and more meaningful experience.

  • Guaranteed Authenticity: As a 100% Peruvian-owned and operated tour company, Ali Peru Treks offers a local and genuine perspective. Their bilingual guides not only know the route but also share a deep understanding of the history, Andean culture, and Inca worldview, connecting you to the true spirit of the place.
  • Responsible and Sustainable Tourism: The agency’s philosophy is centered on sustainable tourism. By traveling with them, you can be sure you are supporting practices that respect the environment and contribute to the well-being of the region.

  • Professional and Personalized Service: As local experts, their mission is to professionally manage every detail of the trip so you can focus solely on enjoying the moment. This includes the logistics of the train transportation, entrance permits, a box lunch, and expert guidance on both the trail and at Machu Picchu.

We will pick you up at your hotel around 4:00 a.m. Pick-up points will be anywhere indicated, such as hotels or apartments located in the city of Cusco, Urubamba, or Ollantaytambo. After pick-up, we will take our private bus for 2 hours to the Ollantaytambo train station. At this point, we will board the train and travel along the river of the Sacred Valley and beautiful landscapes to KM 104 – Chachabamba. After getting off the train, we will go directly to the checkpoint. Please note that you must bring your original passport to pass through the checkpoint. After passing through the checkpoint, your adventure will begin following the original Inca trail. First, we will visit the first Inca site of Chachabamba, a small archaeological complex believed to have been a checkpoint for Machu Picchu. Your guide will explain the entire history of this archaeological complex.
After exploring the archaeological site of Chachabamba, we will continue walking with a gradual ascent for 4 hours until we reach the archaeological site of Wiñay Wayna, which means “eternal youth” in the indigenous Quechua language. The name comes from the orchids that abound in the area, making Wiñay Wayna perhaps the most beautiful place on the trail. After touring the archaeological site, we will enjoy our box lunch. After lunch, we will continue with another hour’s walk to Inti Punku or the “Gateway of the Sun,” from where you can see Machu Picchu in all its majesty and grandeur. We will then descend for approximately 40 minutes to the main platform of Machu Picchu, where you can take some spectacular photos and enjoy the archaeological site of Machu Picchu.

The advantage of these spots is that they tend to be less crowded, offering a more peaceful experience.

Afterwards, we will briefly leave Machu Picchu to check in and use the restrooms, and re-enter around 3:00 pm for a 1.5-hour guided tour of Circuit 03. This tour will cover the most important areas of Machu Picchu, including several key temples. At 4:30 pm, we will take a bus to Aguas Calientes for dinner. Afterwards, we will board the 6:20 pm train back to Ollantaytambo, where our van will take us back to Cusco. We will arrive at your hotel around 10:00 pm.
